What connecting a folder actually does
It can look, but it cannot touch
PhonoLeaf only ever reads the folder you pick. It cannot create, edit, move or delete anything in your Drive, and the permission it holds is read-only. Even if we wanted to tidy your Drive, we could not.
New books let themselves in
Add another EPUB to the folder later and it appears in your library by itself, with nothing to re-pick and nothing to re-import. Nobody has to be told.
Your books never meet our servers
PhonoLeaf has no backend for your books. Files travel from Google straight to your device, and the voice is made there too. We could not read your books if we tried.
Real covers, not grey rectangles
Each book's actual cover art is pulled out of the file itself and kept for fast browsing. Your shelf ends up looking like your shelf.
Questions people actually ask
Does PhonoLeaf need full access to my Google Drive?
It only reads the folder you choose. Google’s screen asks to “see and download” your Drive files because Google has no permission for a single folder that also sees the books you add later. PhonoLeaf opens only that folder, and only its EPUB files, and can never change or delete anything. Your books go from Google straight to your phone, never through our server. Google has verified the app, an independent lab has tested its security, and you can remove the access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Books kept on your phone need no Drive access at all.
What happens if I add a new book to the folder?
It appears in your PhonoLeaf library automatically the next time you open the app, with no re-picking and no re-importing.
Is my Google account data safe?
Yes. Sign-in is used only to reach the ebook files in your own Drive. There is no separate PhonoLeaf account to create, and signing out revokes its access to your Google account.
